Why Does a Water Heater Trip the Fuse Box?
A water heater or immersion heater that repeatedly trips the RCD or MCB in your consumer unit is one of the most common winter callouts for UK heating engineers. Cold weather accelerates the failure of ageing components, and a tripping circuit is always a sign that something needs replacing — not resetting and ignoring.
This guide covers the three most likely causes in order of probability, so you can diagnose the fault systematically and order the correct part first time.
Safety first: Always isolate the circuit at the consumer unit before inspecting any electrical components. If the RCD trips immediately on reset, do not attempt further investigation yourself — call a qualified electrician.
Cause 1 — Earth Fault on the Immersion Heater Element
This is the most common cause of an RCD trip on an immersion heater circuit. Over time — particularly in hard-water areas — limescale builds up on the element sheath, causing it to overheat and eventually crack. Once the sheath is compromised, current leaks to earth and the RCD trips instantly.
How to test:
- Isolate the circuit and disconnect the element wiring at the terminal block inside the immersion head.
- Set a multimeter to resistance (Ω) and test between each terminal and the element body (earth).
- A healthy element reads OL (open circuit) to earth. Any finite reading — even a high one — indicates an earth fault.
- Also test terminal-to-terminal: a 3kW element should read approximately 19–20 Ω. An open circuit (OL) means the element has burned out.
If the element fails either test, replace it before restoring power.

Cause 2 — Failed Thermostat or Thermal Cut-Out (TCO)
If the element tests healthy but the circuit still trips, the thermostat or thermal cut-out assembly is the next suspect. A failed TCO can cause the element to run continuously without temperature control, eventually overheating the water and drawing enough current to trip the MCB — or causing a resistive fault that trips the RCD.
Signs of a thermostat fault:
- Water is scalding hot (thermostat not cutting power at set temperature)
- TCO reset button won't stay in
- Circuit trips after 30–60 minutes of heating rather than immediately on switch-on
A delayed trip (rather than an instant one) almost always points to a thermal fault rather than an earth fault.

Cause 3 — Faulty Fused Spur Switch
If both the element and thermostat test fine, the fused spur switch itself may be at fault. Spur switches can develop internal arcing or insulation breakdown over time, particularly in damp airing cupboard environments. A faulty spur can cause intermittent RCD trips even when the heater components are healthy.
How to check:
- With the circuit isolated, remove the spur faceplate and inspect for signs of burning, discolouration, or melted plastic around the terminals.
- Check the 13A cartridge fuse inside — replace if blown.
- If the fuse is intact but the spur shows any heat damage, replace the entire unit.

A Note on Winter Faults
Cold weather causes metal components to contract, which can turn a marginal element fault into a definitive one overnight. If your water heater was fine all summer and starts tripping in November or December, the element has almost certainly reached end of life — the cold snap just pushed it over the edge. Replacing it proactively before the fault worsens is always cheaper than an emergency callout.
